Lofoten is one of Europe’s Most Spectacular Destinations. In winter, this dramatic archipelago in northern Norway transforms into a fairytale landscape, where snow-covered mountains rise straight from deep-blue fjords, and icy coastlines and charming fishing villages create a stunning visual contrast. The red-painted rorbuer (fishermen’s cabins) and harbor scenes add warmth and character to the cool winter tones of white, blue, and gray.
The Arctic winter light in Lofoten is truly unique—soft, colorful, and often dramatic. Even under heavy clouds, the atmospheric light enhances the expression of the landscape, offering endless opportunities for creative photography. In early March, the days are quickly growing longer, and the golden hours of dawn and dusk stretch out further and further. We’ll make the most of every minute of this golden light and stay alert in the evenings, ready to capture the magical northern lights that often dance across the sky on clear nights.
On this seven-day photo tour, we’ll be fully focused on landscape photography, creative vision, and technical development. Mornings and evenings will be spent in the field capturing the grandeur and details of Lofoten. Midday will be used for travel, rest, or joint image reviews and post-processing. When conditions are right, we’ll also head out at night to photograph the northern lights.
LOFOTEN
Lofoten is an archipelago in Nordland County, located north of the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. It consists of several main islands, the most well-known being Austvågøy, Vestvågøy, Flakstadøy, and Moskenesøy. Further out in the Norwegian Sea lie the inhabited islands of Værøy and Røst. Lofoten is home to several picturesque fishing villages, including Henningsvær, Reine, Nusfjord, and Å, where traditional red rorbuer—fishing cabins on stilts—are still in use by both locals and visitors. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Lofoten has a relatively mild climate despite its northern latitude, which provides favorable conditions for rich wildlife and excellent fishing, particularly for cod. Lofoten has a long history as a fishing community and is today a popular destination for nature lovers, adventurers, and photographers from around the world who come to experience its spectacular scenery, magical light, and the chance to witness the northern lights.
PHOTOGRAPHIC LEARNING
Throughout the trip, our photographic leader will continuously provide tailored guidance based on your experience and skill level. We’ll have theoretical sessions discussing composition, creative vision (such as working with abstract imagery), and how to capture both grand landscapes and more intimate details. We’ll also go over the use of filters, working with long exposures, night photography, and techniques for capturing the northern lights. In the field, everyone will receive individual coaching to ensure you get the most out of the time we spend shooting.
This is a journey for those who want to grow as photographers in one of the Nordic region’s most atmospheric and image-rich environments. Lofoten in its winter coat offers not only powerful natural experiences but also the chance to create images that truly resonate.
Itinerary
Day 1 (2/3) (Dinner)
We’ll meet at Evenes/Harstad Airport in connection with Norwegian’s flight from Oslo, arriving at 10:35 AM. From there, we’ll travel to our accommodation near Leknes. After settling in, we’ll head out for our first photo session.
We’ll start at one of Lofoten’s most iconic photo locations – the dramatic beach of Uttakleiv. Here, we’ll photograph until sunset before returning for dinner. If weather conditions are favorable and the aurora forecast is promising, we’ll head out again later in the evening to capture the northern lights dancing across the stunning landscape.
Day 2-4 (3-5/3) (Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner)
Leknes will be our base for these three days, where we’ll focus on the dramatic landscapes of central Lofoten. We’ll visit well-known locations such as the beaches of Uttakleiv, Haukland, and Unstad—each famous for their unique coastal scenery. In addition, we’ll explore lesser-known but equally photogenic fjords, mountain views, and hidden gems.
The schedule remains flexible to follow the light and weather conditions, maximizing our chances for stunning images. Each evening, we’ll keep a close eye on the aurora forecast and be ready to head out to chase the northern lights.
Day 5-6 (6-7/3) (Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner)
Reine will be our next destination as we move to the picturesque southern part of Lofoten. This area is home to some of the region’s most iconic views, including the charming fishing village of Reine and the beautifully patterned beach of Skagsanden.
After a sunrise photo session on day 6, we’ll begin our journey north toward Harstad. On the way back, we’ll stop at some of our favorite locations—or at new, exciting scenes we may have discovered during our journey south.
Day 7 (8/3) (Breakfast)
On our final morning, we’ll enjoy a relaxed breakfast buffet—voted year after year as the best in Norway—before heading to Evenes/Harstad Airport. The flight we plan around departs from Evenes/Harstad at 11:05 AM.
Please note: The daily program above serves as a general guide. Depending on weather conditions and our nighttime activities (aurora photography), we will adjust the schedule to give ourselves the best possible opportunities to capture amazing images during the trip. The area offers an abundance of photographic possibilities—we let the light and nature lead the way!
