The very word “orchid” evokes something exotic and slightly mysterious to many people. Species names like lady’s slipper, early marsh-orchid, and ghost orchid sound as if they belong to a distant world. But you don’t have to travel far to find them—they are right here on Öland.

With an estimated 27,000+ species, orchids are one of the most diverse plant families in the world. The exact number is uncertain, as orchid taxonomy is complex and closely related species often hybridize. In Europe, there are around 130 orchid species distributed across about 30 genera and three subfamilies. In Sweden, there are 59 species, subspecies, and varieties, with a few more across the Nordic region. Orchid classification is actively debated and is now increasingly studied using DNA techniques, so further changes in the number of recognized species can be expected.

ORCHIDS OF ÖLAND
On Öland, there are 36 species, subspecies, and varieties from 16 genera, making it the second richest region in Sweden for orchids. Here, orchids can be found in a wide range of habitats—from the pine forests of northern Öland to the deciduous woodlands of central Öland, as well as hay meadows, alvar landscapes, and rich fens.

At the time of the workshop, the number of flowering orchid species on Öland is at its peak. Naturally, flowering depends on how the spring season develops, but we can expect more than 20 species in bloom. We will visit the best locations for the season and have the opportunity to photograph species such as early marsh-orchid and its varieties (including blood and wax orchids), fragrant and lesser butterfly-orchids, heath spotted-orchid, frog orchid, lesser butterfly-orchid, fly orchid, bird’s-nest orchid, and burnt orchid. With some luck, the white helleborine may still be flowering in the pine forests of northern Öland, where we may also find the delicate spider orchid.

PHOTOGRAPHIC LEARNING
The weekend begins with a theory session on Friday afternoon, where we will look at orchid images for inspiration and discuss ideas for the days ahead. We will spend as much time as possible out in the orchid habitats, adapting our photography to the prevailing weather conditions.

We will of course go through a range of photographic techniques, and when conditions allow, we will work with backlighting during the early morning and late evening light. We will also share tips on how to create strong images even during the harsher midday light. In addition, we will explore techniques such as focus stacking and ways to create more creative compositions.

We will photograph during mornings and evenings, as well as during the day on Saturday. On Sunday morning, we will work with our images and have constructive image reviews, where you will receive feedback on your work and gain inspiration from others.

Naturally, we will also share knowledge about the orchids of Öland. In the field, there will be plenty of opportunity for individual guidance, ensuring that you get the most out of your time with us.
