SOME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Excellent photographic opportunities as the terns fly, forage, and interact around the hide
  • Chances to see and photograph white-tailed eagles, western marsh harriers, and ospreys in the landscape
  • Floating photo hide with several “perches” for the terns at eye level
  • Magical morning and evening light – soft illumination, low angles, and reflections create perfect conditions for atmospheric photography
  • You will be photographing from the hide in the evening and the following morning

From our floating photo hide, you are right at the center of the action, surrounded by black terns and other wetland birds. Here, you can photograph and film the birds up close, at eye level, in an environment where they move naturally and undisturbed.

The open sedge meadows and mudflats of Fläcksjön form a rich delta habitat teeming with fish and birds. The shallow water, wide-open spaces, and expansive horizon provide ideal conditions for nature photography, while the surrounding farmland offers a calm backdrop that enhances the experience, especially in the soft morning or evening light.

The constant calls of the black terns fill the air, creating an intense and lively atmosphere. Occasionally, a white-tailed eagle, western marsh harrier, or osprey may appear, and their hunting behavior provides dramatic and striking photographic opportunities. In the background, you can hear the haunting calls of the great bittern and the water rail, while small songbirds add their melodies along the shore – together creating a rich soundscape that mirrors the wetland’s biodiversity.

The floating hide is stable and positioned at the perfect camera height, allowing you to work methodically with composition, light, and bird behavior. A calm yet intense wildlife photography experience, where the close proximity to the black terns offers fantastic opportunities for both still photography and video.

More information

  • THE HIDE
The hide has two side openings at sitting height (chairs are provided), as well as openings at the front and rear. It is also possible to lie down and photograph or film from a low perspective. The hide is a purpose-built unit with floating elements.

It is very important to us to cause minimal disturbance to the birds. Although the hide is far from invisible, the terns are very unafraid and allow people to approach practically as close as desired. We provide perches for the birds, making them easy to find and approach closely.

  • WHERE
We operate in Svartådalen, Västmanland, and the usual meeting point for guests is the parking lot at Fläckebo Church.

  • HOW?
We guide you out to the hide, reaching it by canoe. We meet in the afternoon—exact time and place will be provided closer to your hide day—and you stay in the hide until the following morning.

The first hours of the morning and the last hours of the evening offer the best light and the highest bird activity. Therefore, it is best to photograph or film during these morning and evening periods. Bird activity is also at its peak when it is calm, so these hours are preferable for that reason as well.

  • WHEN?
Black terns start molting early and already in June begin to develop white feathers on their throats (mainly the females). They are therefore at their deepest black color in late May to early June.

  • PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT
The focus is on bird photography. Since you will be photographing from specially designed hides, it is recommended to bring a telephoto lens with a focal length of 300–400 mm, although 500 mm also works very well.
If you have a shorter telephoto or a zoom lens, you can use a teleconverter to increase the focal length.

If you have  two camera bodies, it is recommended to bring both.

You must bring your own tripod.

  • OTHER EQUIPMENT
Binoculars, headlamp, warm clothing, rubber boots, sleeping bag, mattress.

Water bottle, thermos, and your own packed food sufficient for the entire stay.
